A masterpiece by William B. Kerr, Newark, New Jersey, USA, c1901. The detailed work on this piece is outstanding, it is the finest match safe that we have ever put up for offer. The match safe depicts a scene of Pan dancing with nude nymphs in a wooded pond setting. In Greek mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, nature, hunting, shepherds and flocks. He is associated with fertility and the season of Spring. Four nude nymphs are shown dancing with pan in the foreground and two additional nude onlookers are in the background. The detail of the foliage and the dancers is breathtaking. The reverse of the case is engraved with a script cypher 'WEJ' and the date 3-15-1901. Mass 33g. Size 68x42mm. Polished and in very good condition with few usage marks.
